In July this year, the Makewana’s  Daughters team visited three primary schools in rural Zomba with the aim of encouraging young girls to write. The schools, which had been identified by the Education Division in Zomba, were Matiti, Chikala and Chikupira.

The young girls, all in Standard Seven, were given notebooks and pens and asked to write short stories on either gender equality or climate change. They were given the choice of writing either in English or in Chichewa. On November, 2019, Makewana’s Daughters visited the schools again, this time to announce the results. In the interschool competition, Chikupira  emerged the winner, but there were  also winners at each school level. Prizes in all three primary schools included school bags with assorted items such as laundry and bath soap, toothpaste, body lotion and notebooks.

Money for purchase of the items was from a donation from Dr. Asante Mtenje, Head of English at Chancellor College, from AsbjørnEidhammer, former Norwegian Ambassador to Malawi, and from contributions made by the Makewana Team.

The team has plans to make this primary school competition an annual event.
